WHEREAS, unhealthful nutrition and physical inactivity among children and youth have become a national epidemic and a health crisis with profound medical implications; and
WHEREAS, children born today may have shorter life spans than their parents; and
WHEREAS, this epidemic disproportionately impacts African American and Latino youth, such that the risk for diabetes is one in two among Latino and African American children and one in three for other children; and
WHEREAS, the cost of obesity and physical inactivity to California is 28 billion dollars a year; and
WHEREAS, the Strategic Alliance developed recommendations with the input of professionals across California for the Governor’s Summit on Obesity; and
WHEREAS, the Strategic Alliance recommendations address food and beverage industry, employers, entertainment and professional sports, health care insurers and providers, government and school; and
WHEREAS, the Strategic Alliance recommendations are in accord with those of the Citywide Nutrition and Physical Activity Task Force Recommendations, endorsed by the Health Commission in January, 2005; and
WHEREAS, the San Francisco Citywide Chronic Disease Prevention Consortium supports the Strategic Alliance Recommendations; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the Health Commission commends the Strategic Alliance for its commitment to improving access and utilization of nutrition and physical activity opportunities for children and youth in California; and be it
FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Health Commission endorses the principles of the
Strategic Alliance to promote healthy food and activity environments and
commends the Taking Action recommendations to the Governor’s Summit for
consideration.
I hereby certify that the San Francisco Health Commission at its meeting of July
19, 2005 adopted the foregoing resolution.
