Will answer general questions about residential asbestos and send asbestos information.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Asbestos Hotline
Office of Toxic Substances
Will send general asbestos information on federal requirements in the areas of industrial and commercial notification procedures, school programs, analytical methods, abatement projects and product use restrictions.

Regional EPA in California
Enforces the federal NESHAP Work Practice Standards. Receives asbestos demolition/renovation notifications (Ask for NESHAP-Asbestos), and will accept citizen complaints about demolition or renovation activities.

American Lung Association

Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD)
Will answer general questions about residential asbestos. Will send asbestos information. Handles citizen complains about asbestos work. Enforces National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) for asbestos, receives asbestos demolition/renovation notifications.

Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) – Headquarters
Enforces health and safety regulations for asbestos removal workers. Workers or individuals who have complaints about unsafe asbestos abatement practices should call the Cal/OSHA district office nearest the work-site of concern.

Department of Industrial Relations
Provides steps to take when contracting with an asbestos removal company, discuss existing laws and regulations pertaining to asbestos-related work in California, and provides a lookup of all licensed asbestos certified contractors.

American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA)
Maintains a lookup of industrial hygiene members who advertise as asbestos consultants.

California Contractors State License Board
Certifies asbestos removal contractors, accepts complaints about certified asbestos removal contractors.

San Francisco District Attorney’s Office
Accepts complaints about asbestos work by unlicensed asbestos contractors, improper asbestos removal work by licensed asbestos contractors. Also, failure to comply with notification requirements and illegal transportation and disposal of asbestos waste. Also, will accept complaints about inadequate notification to employees or commercial tenants.
