If your child care operation is in a building or home that was built before 1979, it is likely to contain lead-based paint. If the paint in these buildings becomes damaged or disturbed, lead dust is released and remains on surfaces that children touch. Children exposed to lead dust can be harmed. This is because lead exposure can affect a child's brain and nervous system and contribute to problems in learning and behavior.
