Water Quality: Beach Monitoring

Environmental Health Water Quality staff monitor the beaches to ensure that San Francisco beaches are safe to use. Surfers, swimmers, boaters, casual beach walkers, all enjoy the benefits of a clean and sanitary beach. When violations occur, the contaminated beaches are posted for public notification.

Water samples are collected and analyzed for bacteria to determine compliance with the California Sanitation, Healthfulness and Safety of Ocean Water-Contact Sports Areas Regulations, Title 17, California Code of Regulations.  The public can get up to date information on the quality of the beaches by calling (415) 242-2214 or by visiting the SFPUC's Beach Water Quality webpage.
